There is evidence of Bronze age and Iron age settlement at Billericay at nearby Norsey Woods, where Burial Mounds have been constructed. The Pilgrim Fathers met at Billericay before departing for the New World, and there is a town called Billerica in Massachusetts to commemorate this. Many buildings in Billericay are named after this event, such as Mayflower House. Other notable buildings are the Union Workhouse built in 1840, and Burghstead Lodge.
